![]() There are aromas of toasted grain and orange zest. Nose: This whiskey smells more citrusy in character than the Broken Barrel California Oak Kentucky Straight Bourbon reviewed alongside it. ![]() Vital Stats: Aged at least two years in new, charred oak, 47.5% ABV, mash bill: corn, rye, and malted barley, SRP $36.99/ 750ml bottle.Īppearance: This is light golden yellow-orange in color. Score: 3.5/5 Tasting Notes: Broken Barrel Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey ![]() The fruity-floral note feels a touch artificial, which detracts a bit from the experience. It’s not wildly complex, but it’s surprisingly lengthy. This has a moderately long, peppery finish that gives off notes of butter crackers, toasted sesame, sea spray, and a lasting fruity-floral note that leans heavily on rose and apple. The flavor is pleasantly bitter with notes of fresh rose, ripe red apples, and sweet grains. Palate: This is light-bodied and silky in the mouth, with a slight grip of tannin on the finish. It’s a fruity and floral whiskey, but on the moderate side. This is tied together with a well-integrated base note of vanilla and pink eraser. The fruity aromas are very appealing and open up into more complex floral notes of rose oil, fresh irises, lilacs, and violet candies. It reminds me of candy corn, Sweet Tarts, and Froot Loops cereal. Nose: This opens on the nose with a delicate note of sweet grains and malt candies. Vital Stats: Aged at least two years in new, charred oak, finished with California Cabernet oak and new French oak staves, 44% ABV, mash bill: corn, rye, and malted barley, SRP $30.99/ 750ml bottle.Īppearance: This whiskey is moderate amber in color with a brownish-green undertone. Tasting Notes: Broken Barrel California Oak Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey The Broken Barrel California Oak Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is finished with “80% Central Coast Cabernet barrel staves and 20% new charred French oak staves.” Per their website, the Broken Barrel Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and the Broken Barrel Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon are finished using their “signature” blend of French oak, ex-bourbon cask, and sherry cask staves. Today, I’m reviewing three of the four whiskeys that make up their core whiskey lineup. This renewed emphasis on quality base spirit suggests promising things to come. Master Distiller Jacob Call distills the spirits at Owensboro Distilling Co. The base whiskey is now exclusively Kentucky Straight Bourbon. In 2022, Broken Barrel announced that they had relaunched their core whiskey lineup. He claims that finishing impacts 80% of the whiskey’s flavor, so his emphasis on the staves comes as no surprise. You can find the list of stave types, dubbed the “oak bill” by Benhaim, on the bottle. Broken Barrel’s standard mix of staves is a combination of 40% ex-bourbon, 20% Sherry cask, and 40% new French oak barrel staves. Whiskey barrels are selected and batched into tanks where staves from a variety of cask and barrel types are added to infuse. Really good store pick.Benhaim uses a unique production method to finish his whiskeys. Bold flavor, and I just really enjoy the oaky, buttery cinammon toast and then the cinammon apples that follow. Interesting.įinish: Oak, cinnamon, vanilla, and apple skin linger. I think I had a similar red apple skin note with Weller 107, although this is not wheated. Actually on second sip the red apple skin and vanilla becomes much more prominant. Buttery cinnamon toast with some red apple skins thrown in. Palate: Strong, bold palate flexing it’s 123 proof. It’s nostalgiac even, remembering fondly one of my favorite childhood breakfast foods. Smells just like buttery cinnamon toast with some sugar sprinkled on top. Nose: Butter slathered oak, cinnamon, vanilla, refined white sugar, red apple skin, and a slight bready note. This bottling is 8 years old and is bottled at 123 proof. It is distilled in Indiana, so I assumed it was MGP, but upon further review, it seems they stopped using MGP and have since sourced other distillers. One of the store picks was this Backbone Bourbon Uncut Single Barrel. ![]() I was at an “unofficial” tasting event at my favorite local shop where some “enthusiasts” brought some bottles to share and the store owner let us all sample the newest store picks.
